CVS bringing new store to Southwest Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Plans are in the works to have another pharmacy grace the landscape on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids.

Mike DeAngelis, a spokesman for CVS Caremark, confirms that they closed last week on a deal to buy the land where Bonanza and Happy Joe's sit on 16th Avenue and Edgewood Road SW.

The drug store chain confirms that they will build a new store on the site next year.

Just after the deal closed, the Bonanza Restaurant at 3505 16th Avenue SW, closed their doors.

A move that came as a shock to Travis Bark, the General Manager of Happy Joe's next door.

Bark confirms that the land his restaurant has sat on since 1986, at 3419 16th Avenue SW, was also bought in the deal.

He says they have a lease with CVS through April 30, 2011.

Bark says they are looking for a new location on the southwest side of town.

The new CVS store will be right across Edgewood Road SW from the Walgreen's store at 3325 16th Avenue SW and will be less than a mile south of the new Walgreen's store being built on the northwest corner of Edgewood Road and Johnson Avenue NW.
