Patients allowed back in Grundy County hospital

GRUNDY CENTER (KWWL) -- Patients had to be relocated at Grundy County Memorial Hospital due to a gas leak Wednesday afternoon.

They were allowed back around 6 p.m. Hospital operations are currently running as normal.

According to the hospital, a landscape contractor hit an old gas line that wasn't being used but still had residual gas inside.

Patients in the long-term care area were moved to the medical office building. The hospital says the staff worked to feed patients and maintain normal operations. Patients were moved back into their rooms within a few hours when it was deemed safe.

Black Hills Energy vented the line and aired out the affected area of the hospital.

The hospital public information officer Erin Baumgart says the emergency department was put on diversion while the situation was being handled.

The hospital has a 25 bed emergency area and a 55 bed long-term care area. The hospital is affiliated with Allen Health System.
