Dubuque Ice Center on schedule to open in August

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Crews are working on Dubuque's Mystique Ice Center. Construction for the project began in December. The new center will house the USHL Fighting Saints hockey team as well as the local youth leagues and figure skating groups. But will it be ready in time for hockey season?

The short answer is yes! We're told the center will be complete by mid-August. Tuesday afternoon we stopped by the construction sight to take a look at the progress. The sight of the Dubuque Ice Center ice rink was filled with machines and supplies.

"The roofs done the upper concourse level is going on right now," said Bob Woodward, President of Dubuque Community Ice Center Inc.

Of course the temperature outside is comparable to what fans and skaters will feel inside, because of abnormal weather. But for now you'll just have to use your imagination.

"Seating for 3000 with room about 3200. Some of the other amenities include a total of eight locker rooms. One for the USHL team and seven for the community. A new concession area," said Woodward.

All of this ready to use by August. After breaking ground in December crews have been sliding through construction.

"It goes together quicker then you would expect. So literally in the next few weeks you'll see the sides go and they'll start closing it up and doing a lot of the interior stuff," said Woodward.

The grand opening will also be a welcome back of sorts the for the Dubuque Fighting Saints hockey team. But the new ice center won't just be home to the USHL team, it will also welcome players and skaters from the community, once the ice is laid down.

"Its gonna be home for youth hockey, home for figure skating, home for the saints and home for the community to use anytime they want to," said Woodward.

Once these machines are gone and constructions complete. Dubuque will welcome it's first ever, year around ice arena.

The Dubuque Devil high school hockey team will have, for the first time ever, their own locker room and storage facility. They also expect a 20-percent increase in participation in youth hockey leagues as well as figure skating. Perhaps even convince some people to put on a pair of skates... For the first time in years.

The ice center is also expected to draw business to surrounding restaurants and hotels. Bringing in thousands of people each year for tournaments and games.
