Panther Men's Hoops Signs Kennedy's Martino

University of Northern Iowa head coach Ben Jacobson announced the signing of Max Martino to the Panther men's basketball squad for the

2010-11 season.

"We are excited to add Max to our program," Jacobson said. "He has

achieved at a high level in the classroom and on the basketball floor.

His work ethic is terrific. Max comes from a quality program and we look forward to him being an important member of our basketball team."

Martino (6'5", 195 lbs.) was named the 2009-10 Cedar Rapids Kennedy Male Athlete of the Year. The four-sport competitor is also the valedictorian of his high school class and earned academic all-state honors as a senior. Martino was a two-year varsity starter at guard for Kennedy. He was named the team's MVP as a senior and was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year. Martino earned second-team all-conference and all-metro honors as a senior.

Martino was also a standout on the track and football squads. Martino was a member of the 2010 Drake Relays champion in the shuttle hurdle relay, which set Drake, state and national records in the event. On the football field, Martino served as team captain and was named team MVP.

He also earned academic all-state honors on the gridiron, while also being named to participate in the 2010 Shrine Bowl. He earned second-team all-state honors and first-team all-conference honors in football as a senior. Martino also played two seasons of baseball as a prep.

He has been accepted into the UNI Honors Program and will begin his course work this fall.
