Former Marion resident sentenced on gun charge

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A former Marion resident who now lives in Cedar Rapids, has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison for being a felon and drug user in possession of a firearm.

Marion Police searched the home of Cecil Howell, 40, on August 29, 2007 and found a .22 rifle in his closet.

He also admitted to using cocaine and marijuana and had felony drug convictions in Illinois.

While it is legal in Iowa for drug users to have guns and ammunition, federal law makes it illegal.

Howell pleaded guilty to the charge on December 16, 2009 and was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment, and a special assessment of $100 on May 6, 2010.

He will also serve three-years of supervised release following his prison term.
