Sinclair site demolition underway

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- There was a flurry of activity at the site of the former Sinclair Meat Packing plant on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids on Monday.

Workers, trucks and heavy equipment were all getting the site ready for the demolition project that is estimated to cost $8 million and take 6 months to complete.

The demolition project will be done in several phases.

The buildings on the 28 acre site were heavily damaged during the floods of 2008 and several buildings were reduced to rubble after two fires on the site in 2009.

The only structure not included in the current demolition contract is the smokestack.

The Historic Preservation Commission wants to save the smokestack, but others say it's not structurally sound and it appears to be leaning.

A decision on the future of the smokestack is expected by the end of July.
