Estherville Meteorite fell in 1879

ESTHERVILLE (KWWL) -- The fall made a crater 12 feet wide and 6 feet deep, making it the largest meteorite that has been known to have fallen in North America.

The Estherville Meteorite fell on the Sever Lee Farm May 10, 1879.  It burst into three pieces as it fell to earth.  The pieces weighed 431, 151, and 106 pounds.  The meteorite is composed of iron, nickel, phosphorous, sulfur, and a metal not known that was called Esthervillite.
