John Wayne Gacy executed in 1994

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (KWWL) -- John Wayne Gacy was executed May 10, 1994.  A court had convicted him of murdering 33 young men and boys.

Gacy had at one point in his life lived in Waterloo and was the chaplain of the Jaycees.  During that period, he would dress up as Pogo the Clown to entertain children.  That's how he came to be known as the clown killer.  After police searched his Illinois home in 1978, they found the remains of 28 young men and boys.  It took a jury barely an hour to find him guilty.

He was sentenced to death by lethal injection.  The procedure took 18 minutes, an amount of time some questioned as cruel and unusual, except for family of the victims.
