Matter of Faith: Church builds addition for child care center

by Danielle Wagner

IOWA CITY (KWWL) First Mennonite Church in Iowa City is finishing up a new addition. The space is for Home Ties Child Care Center. The center and church have had a relationship for 15 years.

"We've had a collaboration with them since 1995 when we heard that there was a need in our community for child care for low-income and homeless families," said Diane Funk with First Mennonite Church.

The church donates space, janitorial services and paper products to the day care. Now, First Mennonite is giving the day care it's own space, separate from the church.

"Because we've shared space for so long they have to put their equipment away on Friday so the church can use the facility. That takes time from the staff. So we're really excited for them to have space that's just their own," said Funk.

The addition includes handicap accessible restrooms, a kitchen and an art area. Funk said the quarter million dollar project is funded mostly by the church congregation. She said it's part of the church's mission.

Home Ties Child Care offers a safe place for children of low-income or homeless families to go during the day. The church wants to see it continue.

"If parents need to go to medical appointments, while seeking employment, housing. It is a short-term daycare, but it allows the families to get on their feet," said Diane Funk.

Funk said the new space is part of a two phase project. The second phase is expanding the fellowship hall, but she said it was more important to add the space for the child care center first.

Home Ties is financially supported through Four C's -- Community Coordinated Child Care. If you'd like to help, call (319) 341-0050.
