St. Luke's Hospital cornerstone laid in 1884

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The cornerstone of St. Luke's Hospital was laid May 7, 1884.

The inspiration for the hospital came a year earlier, in the dying words of a homeless man to an Episcopal minister.  The man died after being critically injured while hopping a freight train in Cedar Rapids.

The following Sunday, Rev. Samuel Ringgold pleaded to the pulpit for a hospital.  The next day, he and his flock began taking donations.  Within months, work began on St. Luke's Hospital.

The original hospital had 15 beds.  That grew to 540 in 2009.
