College collecting human hair to clean up Gulf Coast oil spill

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- A local college wants to help clean up the Gulf Coast oil spill, buy collecting hair clippings.

Capri College is preparing all three of their locations for clean human hair donations.  The hair is used by emergency workers in major oil clean-up efforts.  Human hair naturally absorbs oil.  The clippings are stuffed into nets to create booms, or woven into mats to lay on the beach.

Capri is volunteering with the non-profit company Matter of Trust.  If you're interested in dropping off hair, the clippings must be placed in a clear, trash-free garbage bag.  The college will do the rest of the work to get the hair to the gulf.

Drop-off points are at the following locations:

Cedar Rapids: 2945 Williams Parkway SW 319-364-1541

Davenport: 2540 E.53rd Street 563-388-6642

Dubuque: 395 Main Street 563-588-2379
