Farmers Market find home on RiverLoop Expo Plaza

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- More and more Iowans are buying local. Secretary of Agriculture, Bill Northey, says there has been a 92 percent increase in sales at farmers markets in our state over the last five years.

In 2009, there were 223 farmers markets in Iowa and they brought in $59.4 million. Farmers markets also contributed 374 direct jobs and more than 200 in-direct jobs.

In Waterloo before the vendors could set up there are a few things that needed to be finish on the plaza. Hundreds of bricks needed to be replaced on Jefferson Street because they were cracked and shifting. It was discovered they were too thin for the traffic driving over them.

For just the second market of the season, vendors began setting up shortly before 3:00 in the afternoon with a variety of goods.

Julie Kiefer of Kiefer Produce says the move to the plaza is a good one.

"People are excited to finally be on the plaza and I think it will be a really great move for us," said Kiefer.

Customers are getting used to their new surroundings and looking forward to what the plaza has to offer in the future.

Officials with River Loop Expo Plaza say they are right on schedule for preparing all the My Waterloo activities the only thing they need to cooperate now is the weather.

City officials say the architect and manufacturer of the pavers will be the ones paying for the replacement of bricks.
