Changing jurisdiction of tobacco enforcement

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Changes in tobacco enforcement came to Iowa May 5, 2000.  That's the day funding and authority of tobacco enforcement was appropriated and transferred to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

Under authority granted by the state legislature, the division created the Iowa Pledge Tobacco Education and Enforcement Program.

According to the IDPH, tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death for Iowans.  The state has multiple methods of preventing young people from getting addicted.  State-level initiatives include Quitline Iowa cessation services, the Just Eliminate Lies youth tobacco use prevention program, Priority Population Networks that serve Iowa's diverse communities, and enforcement of Iowa's Smokefree Air Act as well as laws prohibiting tobacco sales to minors.
