Rubashkin Trial begins in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The state trial of Sholom Rubashkin began today in Black Hawk County. This child labor trial began with six defendants, but only Sholom Rubashkin remains. The state dismissed the charges against Abraham Rubashkin, Sholom's father, and the plants Human Resource Officer.

Charges against other former employees were continued to a later date.

During a pre-trail hearing Rubashkin's lawyer argued that the Black Hawk County Jail was not meeting his client's religious needs.

Sheriff Tony Thompson said a number of the requests went against the jails rules and regulations so Rubashkin will stay at the Linn County Jail during three week trial.

"We are to a point we've agreed that we will not make concessions to that degree because of the jeopardy that it puts our facility in as far as safety security and so contrary to so many of our policies and procedures and because we don't have to," said Sheriff Thompson.

Jury selection will continue Wednesday morning. Opening statement could happen as early as tomorrow afternoon.
