Johnson County woman assaults officers in prison

MITCHELLVILLE (KWWL) - A Johnson County woman is accused of assaulting three officers Sunday at the Iowa Correctional Institution for women in Michellville.

According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, two correctional officers responded to a cell check of Inmate Andrea Paterson Sunday evening. Upon arrival, officers discovered that Paterson had the cell window covered with toilet paper and would not respond to verbal commands. Upon opening the cell door, corrections officers say they saw Paterson sitting on the floor covered with a blanket. When they removed the blanket, they sat Paterson assaulted both officers with kicks and punches. Two officers were assaulted in the chest and rib areas. A third officer was spat on upon in the face and chest, according to officer reports.

Upon arrival of additional response staff, Paterson was soon restrained. Paterson remained in her assigned Unit 6 cell which is a high security unit.

The officers received immediate medical attention from institution medical personnel. The officer that was spat upon was treated and decontaminated at the institution health services and the two officers that were physically assaulted were taken to Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines for treatment and later released. Although the Department considers this incident a serious assault, the injuries are not considered critical or life threatening.

Although the institution continues under normal operation, the incident remains under investigation and review until such time as all victim and witness statements are complete. The institution investigation will be referred to the DCI with the findings to be provided to the Polk County Attorney's Office for prosecution.

Paterson is 22 years old and serving an eleven year sentence from Johnson County for Arson 2nd Degree, Reckless Use of Fire/Explosives and Animal Neglect. This sentence began on June 13, 2007.
