New Coralville fire station helping response time

CORALVILLE (KWWL)-- The city of Coralville has seen rapid growth north of Interstate 80.

The original station's location in the heart of town wasn't conducive to serving this area.

So the department has split up and stationed two engines and 14 firefighters in the new $2.6 million facility.

Since coming on line, the new station has been busy, responding to close to half of all calls in Coralville.

Officials say the new location can improve response time by as much as six minutes.

"As the city grew north, obviously we needed a location up here and with only four access points across the interstate, it was wise we put it on the north side, " Coralville Fire Chief Dave Stannard said.

The 15 thousand square foot facility includes a classroom, six dorm rooms, and several offices for emergency response personnel.

The station held its dedication ceremony Friday night.
