Poyner Elementary students plant trees for Arbor Day

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -- New trees are soaking up the rain that fell this Arbor Day.  That's the case in Evansdale, where students at Poyner Elementary have something to be proud of.

A few students took time out from planting to say hi to our camera Friday morning.  They helped plant several new trees outside the school.  When students weren't helping plant, they rotated through classrooms learning about the environment.

The event coincides with efforts at the school to teach citizenship and responsibility.

"We haven't had a lot of landscaping at Poyner, so we decided it'd be great to have trees here and we worked with Greenscene, Mid-America, Tyson and our PTO. We're also planting a tree today in memory of our former teachers that have passed away," principal Pam Zeigler said.

Despite being a week late, Friday's activities at Poyner centered around Earth Day.  That's because the school had it's kindergarten roundup last week on Earth Day.
