Most runs ever in an Iowa high school baseball game

GRISWOLD (KWWL) -- Iowa high school baseball history was made 82 years ago.  April 26, 1928, Atlantic High School set a record number of runs against Griswold High School.

The story behind the blowout starts with a female outfielder named Alice Buckman for Griswold.  The team had an exhibition game scheduled with nearby Atlantic to give the media a chance to see Buckman in action, but an injury two days before the game, plus a tough match the day after with Adair, forced Griswold's coach to field the freshman team, without Buckman.

Atlantic made 109 runs, a record that will likely never be beat, due to mercy rules.  The final score 109-0.  The pitcher for Griswold made about 500 pitches that day.

The only other game to come close to that record for total runs in a game by both teams is the 1991 Essex vs. South Page match.  It ended in a tie after nine innings with 60 total runs scored between both teams.
