Iowans hope for good news during Obama visit

DES MOINES (AP) -- President Barack Obama is coming to Iowa to lay out his plans for revitalizing the economy.

Obama plans to visit Fort Madison, Mount Pleasant and Ottumwa on Tuesday as part of his Main Street Tour.

Southeast Iowa has been hit hard by the recession with unemployment at or above the national rate of 9.7 percent.

Local and state officials say they hope Obama brings good news.

Roger Jones, the executive director of the Ottumwa Economic Development Corporation, says money is needed for infrastructure. Kerry Koonce, a spokeswoman for Iowa Workforce Development, says more money is needed for job training.

But Iowa State University economist David Swenson says there are limits to what the federal government can do and that local communities need to build a mixed economy that isn't dependent on manufacturing.
