Area athletes shine at Drake on Friday

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Friday's rain couldn't put a damper on the action at Drake's big blue oval.  Dike-New Hartford's Hannah Willms picked up right where she left off on Thursday.  In the girls 800 medley, Willms, the anchor, took the exchange from Nicole Hensley in 5th place and rallied to first with a 54.5 split  The wolverines win with a time of 1:47:53.

Willms wasn't done, she won her third event of the relays a little bit later, with a first place finish in the 100 meter dash.

Iowa City West High's Jessica Gehrke was one of just six Drake champions returning this year.  Gehrke would have no problem defending her title in the long jump going 18 feet and a quarter inch.

In the girls 100 meter hurdles, Waverly-Shell Rock's Rachael Peth took second behind Logan-Magnolia's Alex Gochenour's record run.

It was an impressive day for Cedar Falls sophomore James Harrington.  Harrington burst on to the scene at the relays, taking home his first white flag with an 11.01 in the 100 meter dash.

In the boys 110 meter hurdles Linn Mar's Kyle Dunn grabbed first place with a time of 14.2 seconds, while the Cedar Rapids Prairie 1600 sprint medley team would go home happy, after Matt Stocker ran a strong anchor leg, leading his team to victory.

Dyersville Beckman's 4 by 200 squad rounded out the day by also capturing a Drake Relays title.
