Test results show Cedar Rapids mom exposed kids to crack cocaine

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids mom is charged with child endangerment after police say test results show here kids were exposed to crack cocaine.

LaShaunda D. Nelson, 27, was arrested on November 23, 2009 after police searched her home and say they found crack cocaine and prescription pills.

She is charged with a controlled substance violation and unlawful possession of prescription drugs.

According to police, Nelson's three kids, ages 3, 5 and 8, were home at the time.

Hair samples were taken from the kids and results came back earlier this week.

According to Sergeant Cristy Hamblin, the results showed that the kids did not ingest any of the cocaine, but they were exposed to it.

Nelson was arrested again on Tuesday while she was working at McDonald's and now faces a child endangerment charge

DHS took the kids from the home at the time of Nelson's initial arrest, but Hamblin is not sure where they are at currently.

Hamblin says that Nelson was providing daycare for four other kids, but were not at the home in November when she was first arrested.

Hamblin added that Nelson was not licensed.

Nelson is scheduled for an initial appearance on May 12th.
