Kids get free bike helmets

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) – Next week is National Safe Kids Week and the Cedar Rapids Police Department is encouraging children to practice safety by wearing bicycle helmets. The Linn County Safe Kids Coalition and Havertape Chiropractic are teaming up again to sponsor a special safety event just for kids!

The groups will be giving out FREE bicycle helmets (while supplies last), reading books, safety information, kids meal certificates, and more! In addition, kids can put their names in a drawing to win some awesome prizes, including a new bike. Parents, bring your cameras and get a picture of your child with McGruff, the Crime Dog. Visit with Cedar Rapids firefighters and see their fire truck.

The event will be Saturday, April 24, 2010 (1:00 to 4:00 p.m.) at Havertape Chiropractic (209 29th Street NE, Cedar Rapids).

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

More children go to hospital emergency departments for bicycle related crashes than for any other sport.

Bicycle helmets have been proven to reduce the risk of head and brain injury when a crash occurs by as much as 85-88%.

Children and adults should wear a bike helmet every time they ride a bicycle!
