UPDATE: Driver falls asleep, crashes near Urbana

URBANA (KWWL) -- The Iowa State Patrol says a man that crashed his SUV on I-380 north of Urbana on Tuesday, fell asleep at the wheel.

They say Mohammedhasan Sarawan, of Iowa City, was southbound on I-380 at around 7:45 Tuesday morning when he fell asleep.

The SUV then drifted off the right shoulder, through two fences into a corn field, through another fence and back toward the interstate.

The SUV then hit the embankment, went airborne over the southbound lanes, hit the center median and went airborne again, over the northbound lanes and came to rest in the east side ditch.

The trooper investigating the accident says the SUV did burst into flames for a short time after the oil pan was ripped off the vehicle.

Hasan was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Two dogs that were in the vehicle were checked out by a veterinarian and returned to Hasan.

He was ticketed for Failure to Maintain Control.

The trooper says it was very lucky that Hasan didn't hit anyone else.
