VEISHEA riots tarnished 2004 celebration

AMES (KWWL) -- It started around midnight early Sunday the 18th of August.  Several hundred people ran through the streets tearing down light poles, flipping over cop cars, and lighting fires.  VEISHEA 2004 was turning out to be a nightmare.

It took about five hours for police to get the situation under control.  VEISHEA had been alcohol free since 1998, a year after a fatal stabbing during the festivities.

The riots led to changes to the annual celebration at Iowa State University.
