"Pig Book" mention upsets Waterloo organizations

WATERLOO (AP) -- Waterloo officials are expressing outrage over the inclusion of several local initiatives in an expose of pork-barrel spending compiled by a government watchdog group.

The 2010 "Congressional Pig Book" released by Citizens Against Government Waste criticizes the granting of $150,000 for Waterloo Fire Rescue's Fire PALS fire safety education program. The $340,900 for a new Northeast Iowa Food Bank warehouse is also criticized.

Firefighter Shane Schellhorn oversees Fire PALS, which trains firefighters to teach fire safety and accident prevention to children in preschool through fifth grade. He says the program has been a positive in the community.

Food bank executive director Barbara Prather says a new facility is needed to improve service to 40,000 people.

The Pig Book also reports Iowa ranks 17th this year in "pork per capita" among U.S. states.
