RAGBRAI route through Waterloo announced

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- We're only 101 days from the 38th Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

This year it begins in Sioux City on July 25th. Overnight stops will be Storm Lake, Algona, Clear Lake, Charles City, Waterloo and Manchester before riders dip their tires in the Mississippi in Dubuque.

The city of Waterloo will welcome riders on Thursday, July 29th. They'll ride through Clarksville, Parkersburg, Stout and Dike before spending the night at Lost Island Water Park.

With the help of the Iowa State Patrol and local police agencies the RAGBRAI committee decided to have the cyclists take a southern route through Hudson and around Waterloo to Lost Island. The park will be near the main campground for the cyclists.

"We have estimates of upward of 15,000 people on bicycles," said Waterloo RAGBRAI Chair Duane McDonald. "With support folks and other people coming in we're expecting to be somewhere between 20 and 30,000 extra people on that Thursday here in Waterloo."

While the campground will be south of town, the RAGBRAI committee is planning events throughout the city. Busses will be available to take riders from the campground to downtown and other locations.
