Iowa City hit by tornado in 2006


IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- A tornado damaged buildings, including a sorority house at the University of iowa and the historic St. Patrick's Catholic Church April 13, 2006.

The storm dropped six tornadoes on eastern Iowa.  It all started in Tama County with the first touchdown at 7:10 p.m.  Within an hour, tornadoes struck in Linn and Benton Counties.  Then around 8 p.m., an F2 tornado tore a 4.5 mile-long path of destruction right through the heart of Iowa City. At 8:41 p.m., an F1 touched down in Jones County, near Anamosa, damaging almost 50 homes there.

The sixth and final tornado that night killed one person.  Christine McAtee died when a tornado tossed her mobile home near Nichols, a town about 20 miles southeast of Iowa City.
