Cyclones Whip UNI 6-0 in Softball

Posted:

The University of Northern Iowa softball team was held to just two hits in a 6-0 loss to in-state rival Iowa State Tuesday afternoon at the Robinson-Dresser Complex.

Hannah Borcschel and Mackenzie Daigh each tallied hits for the Panthers (20-17) in the loss. Melissa Tillett allowed three earned runs through 2.1 innings to be charged with the loss for UNI.

Iowa State (23-19) tallied 11 hits in the game, led by three from Courtney Wray. Rachel Zabriskie retired 18 of the 19 batters she faced, giving up one hit in 6.0 innings to earn the win.

Tillett retired the first two batters, but Erica Miller reached on an error to extend the first inning. Alex Johnson singled through the right side to put runners on first and second, and Courtney Wray singled into left center to put Iowa State on the board first, 1-0. Sydni Jones drew a walk to load the bases, but Tillett got Amanda Bradberry to ground out to end the inning.

The Panthers were held hitless in the bottom half of the first, and Iowa State took advantage of two UNI errors to score another run and take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

UNI was retired in order in the bottom of the second to keep the ISU lead at 2-0

The Cyclones collected three straight singles to load the bases with nobody out in the top of the third. Pinch hitter Dalyn Varela grounded out to second, but a run scored in the process to extend the Cyclone lead to 3-0. Carleigh Berry singled into center to add another run and put runners on the corners with one out. Jaye Hutcheson entered in relief, and Heidi Kidwell grounded out to third, scoring a run. Hutcheson got Kelsey Kidwell to fly out to right to end the frame with the Cyclones in front, 5-0.

Neither team scored again until ISU scored a run in the top of the sixth to build a 6-0 lead.

Hannah Borcshel broke up ISU’s perfect game with a two-out infield single in the bottom of the sixth. UNI was unable to send her home, however, to keep the UNI deficit at 6-0.

The Cyclones led off the top of the seventh with a double, but the Panther defense kept the runner from scoring to head into the bottom of the seventh trailing by six.

Mackenzie Daigh led off the bottom of the inning with a single through the left side. Jen Larsen reached on a fielder’s choice, and Livi Abney was retired when Cyclone relief pitcher Tori Torrescano knocked down a line drive and made the throw to first. Torrescana struck out Sam Reimer to end the game.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they play at Creighton.
