Cedar Falls credit card fraud

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) UNI Graduate student Bree Castle is a victim of credit card fraud.

"Someone called me and told me there was suspicious activity on my card and they had blocked it for me. It was only $5 in California, but I was still thankful they blocked it for me," said Bree Castle.

She considers herself lucky the activity was caught early.

"I have about five friends that had hundreds of dollars stole," said Castle.

Cedar Falls Police Chief Jeff Olson said at least 40 people have reported illegal activity on their credit cards.

He said no one bank or business was targeted, but police are looking at statements trying to find a common link.

"We get credit card theft reports regularly, but we've never had this number of reports come in this short amount of time. I think they're related," said Chief Olson.

Chief Olson said those committing the fraud are stealing the numbers and actually making new, fake cards.

"In another state we identified an individual who had one of the cards and they did have a card with a different name then the actual account number," he said.

Olson said charges are popping up around the country. He recommends watching your account closely and canceling cards immediately if you notice any unusual activity.

Bree Castle plans to keep a much closer eye on her credit card account.

"I never thought it would happen to me," said Castle.
