Firefighters respond to explosion at Viking Pump

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Nobody was hurt after an explosion at the Viking Pump Manufacturing Plant and Iron Foundry late Sunday evening.  Emergency crews were called to the plant on Viking Road in Cedar Falls not long after 11:00 p.m. to a report of an explosion.

One firefighter on the scene said everybody working was evacuated and nobody was hurt.  He said the explosion happened on the roof after an explosion in a large air compressor at the plant.

Cedar Falls Fire Rescue brought in its ladder truck to put out the fire from above.  No flames were visible from the ground.  Firefighters could be seen spraying water for just a few minutes around midnight.

The interior of the plant appeared to be filled with smoke.

The blast and fire ruined the air compressor and caused some damage to the building. How much damage is not known at this time.

Viking Pump makes positive-displacement pumps and flow-control systems for a variety of purposes.  The Cedar Falls based business employs more than 600 people.  The Manufacturing Plant located in the Cedar Falls Industrial Park was built in 1960.  The company headquarters are located in downtown Cedar Falls.
