Panther softball drops 2 to Drake

CEDAR FALLS -- The University of Northern Iowa softball team dropped a pair of Missouri Valley Conference contests to in-state foe Drake on Saturday, losing 5-1 in the first game and 3-1 in the second.

The Panthers (19-16, 6-5 MVC) were held to just four hits in the first game. Megan Machovec finished 1-of-4 with an RBI. Jen Larsen allowed five earned runs through 4.2 innings to be charged with the loss.

Drake (23-10, 5-3 MVC) used three hits, including a two-run home run, a walk and a sacrifice bunt to tally five runs in the top of the fifth.

Megan Machovec hit an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to put UNI on the board and cut the Panther deficit to 5-1.

The Panthers put two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but they were unable to score another run in the loss.

Livi Abney led UNI with a 2-of-3 performance in the second game, including a double. Melissa Tillett was charged with the loss after giving up three runs in 3.0 innings.

The Panthers took advantage of a Drake error in the bottom of the first to score a run and go on the board first, 1-0.

Drake responded with a two-run home run in the top of the second. The Bulldogs used a solo home run in the top of the third to add another run and extend their lead to 3-1.

The Panthers put two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third, but that was as close as they came to tallying another run in the loss.

The Panthers and Bulldogs wrap up the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
