CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- More than 21,000 pounds of food were collected for Hawkeye Area Community Action Program (HACAP) during the fifth annual Corridor Canstruction Competition.

Fourteen teams, consisting of professional architects and teachers and staff from Eastern Iowan schools, designed buildings from canned food items.

Each team was responsible for collecting the food that was later donated to the food bank.

"There's lots of different ways to go about doing it all the way from rally informal to bring your cans to school to taking a bunch of cash and going out and buying specific cans," Canstruction Corridor member Lydia Fine said.

The designs were judged on creativity.

Fine says that the teams have been getting more creative each year.

"Our first year we had a sombrero and an ice cream cone," Fine said. "Those same teams this year—one is building the woman who lives in a show with a jar of Mrs. Buttersworth as the old woman and another one of the team is doing a rubix cube…"

The event collected an extra 4,000 pounds of food compared to last year.
