USDA visits Independence local food program

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -- The Independence school district has been selected out of more than 300 schools nation-wide to get a visit from the USDA.

The Department of Agriculture is only visiting nine schools across the country.

It's because of the district's farm to school program.  Independence contracts with local producers to serve fresh, local food to students through their lunch program.

"Last fall we actually purchased from over 12 growers and managed to spend about 6,000 dollars locally for our fresh fruits and vegetables that are on the school lunch menu," Food Service Director Kelly Crossley said.

The USDA visit hasn't been scheduled yet. We're told it will happen between now and the end of June.
