Beloit Beats Kernels on Opening Night in Defensive Struggle

Posted:

The first game of the 2010 season need an extra frame to determine the outcome, as the Beloit Snappers (1-0) defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels (0-1), 2-0, on Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium, Thursday night.

Michael Gonzales delivered an RBI single in the top of the tenth inning to score Brian Dozier and Derek McCallum off Kernel reliever David Carpenter (0-1). Snapper reliever Kane Holbrooks worked around two Kernels hits in the bottom of the tenth to save the game for reliever Steve Blevins (1-0)

The game was a pitchers' duel from the start as the chilly April weather gave pitching a decided advantage. Kernels starter Garrett Richards allowed two hits and struck out seven over five innings in a no-decision effort and Beloit starter Liam Hendriks allowed just one hit and struck out seven over five scoreless innings.

The Kernels missed a key opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth as with two outs and the bases loaded Luis Jimenez lined sharply to center field and Jean Segura was doubled off second by Beloit cf Aaron Hicks.

Adam Younger had two of the five Kernel hits, gong 2-4 as Kevin Ramos, Mike Trout and Casey Haerther each added a single.
