Hopping rabbits

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Unless the Easter Bunny was a mid-sized rabbit, he's probably not a very good hopper.

Cassandra Brustkern, age 9, holds a Himalayan rabbit named Steven and explains, "The reason why you don't hop these rabbits is because they're too skinny [and long], their back feet can't make it across the jumps, then the jumps will just fall down."

Brustkern puts Steven back into a kennel and puts a harness on a Rhinelander rabbit called Buck.

At her command, the rabbit jumps over wooden hurdles called "jumps".

Brustkern says that her rabbit can hop over 12 jumps in four seconds.

These show rabbits compete in the Black Hawk County fair. The Cedar Springers 4-H club is trying to get the rabbit competition at the state fair as well.

Competitions entail agility courses or jumps.

To get kids more involved with rabbit hopping, the Cedar Springers is holding rabbit hopping workshops.  They invite people to bring their rabbits to the Black Hawk County Extension Office on April 10 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
