Dog rescued after getting trapped on hill

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A dog that found itself wedged between a rock and hard place, literally, is safe tonight thanks to the efforts of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

Bella, an 8-month old Australian Shepherd, was being walked by the owners sister at Shaver Park at around Noon on Thursday.

When Bella's leash slipped out of Kris Alderson's hand, she took off.

After searching for nearly an hour, Alderson heard whimpers coming from an embankment that leads to a ravine just off Wenig Road and Pikes Peak Court NE in Shaver Park.

Bella was wedged between rocks and was unable to free herself.

Animal Control determined that they couldn't use conventional animal rescue methods, so they called in the fire department.

Using specialty equipment, fire crews were able to stabilize and lift the three large rocks that Bella was trapped between.

The process took about 40 minutes.

Bella was uninjured and returned to her owners, Mike Alderson and Sara Boyd, of Center Point.
