Fake coupons circulate in Cedar Valley

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A batch of fake coupons are making the rounds in the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area.

The coupons offer everything from a free 12-pack of pop to $10 off batteries. Store managers at Hy-Vee say the coupons started showing up on Monday and they weren't discovered to be fakes until Wednesday.

A number of stores throughout the cedar valley accepted at least one of the coupons. Store managers say the losses could be thousands of dollars.

"Every two months or every six to eight weeks somebody will come out with another bank of coupons like this and they get distributed, whether it's through the work place or from your neighbor. I'll say if it looks to good to be true than it probably is," said Hy-Vee Store Director, Jeff Suchomel.

Suchomel also says no company will give anything away for free without getting something in return. It is more common for coupons to say buy one get one free or buy one product and get a different product for half price.
