Iowa in nation's top 5 for Census return

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -- Iowa is tied for fourth in the nation with Wisconsin for returning Census forms so far and has six cities in the top 50.

According to the U.S. Census Web site, 54% of Iowans have returned their census forms as of March 29, 2010.

South Dakota leads the nation at 58%, North Dakota and Nebraska are tied for second at 57%.

In a breakdown by cities, Templeton, in western Iowa, is ranked 28th with an 80% return rate.

Two Eastern Iowa towns also rank in the top 50.  Epworth is ranked 39th with a 78% return rate and Castalia is ranked 44th with a 77% return rate.

Westside is ranked 36th with a 79% return rate, Leighton is ranked 41st with a 78% return rate and Arcadia is ranked 43rd with a 77% return rate.

Overall, the nation return rate is 46%.

The U.S. Census Bureau asks that all census forms be returned by April 1, 2010.

Census takers will visit homes that have not returned a form by mail beginning in April.
