Men accused of shooting officer appear in court

Posted:

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The men accused of robbing a bar and shooting a Dubuque police lieutenant last December were in court Wednesday. Eddie Chest and his son Eddie Adams appeared in Dubuque County Court.

The pair face charges of attempted murder, 1st degree robbery, and unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon.

Their attorneys have filed requests for the two men to have separate trials. Chest's attorneys also want his charges split up. The court heard arguments from the defense and prosecution.

Chest's attorneys also want some evidence, like Chest's police interview in the hospital, thrown out. They want evidence found in a vehicle owned by Chest taken out as well.  Witnesses included DCI investigators, hospital doctors and nurses, and local law enforcement.

Defense is seeking a change of venue because of pre-trial publicity. The judge ruled a mock jury will be polled by questionnaire to gauge any prejudice by potential jurors in Dubuque County. The questionnaires will be mailed out Thursday and must be completed by April 16th.

The judge will make a ruling on all defense motions later. The trial is still set to begin May 3rd.

A gloomy and rainy afternoon didn't stop people from making it out early to the campgrounds Friday. By the afternoon, Scales Pointe Campground and Marina in North Liberty, was full of RVs, tents, and houseboats ready to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. "We don't worry about the weather. We just put a tent up, put a poncho on, and drink in the rain," Mike Kirk said. Kirk said he's been camping at the same spot for five years now and that it's the best place to be. ...More >>
