Cyclone football team opens spring practice

AMES (KWWL) -- Teams are busting out the pads as spring practice is starting up.  Iowa state opened up Monday with thoughts of already improving on a successful 2009 campaign that ended with an Insight Bowl victory over Minnesota.

Paul Rhoads, who's now entering his second year in command says the players have a bit more spring in their step coming off a very positive fall season.

"You go to the bowl game, you win it, you cap it, and you go 7 and 6," says Rhoads, "It sends you into everything about the offseason with a little bit more energy and even optimism."

Defensive back Leonard Johnson agrees.  "We have something to build off of.  Winning a bowl game was great, but we want to achieve more than that."

Iowa State's spring game is set for April 17.  They open their season on a Thursday, September 2, against Northern Illinois.
