University of Iowa practices Hesco Barrier set up

IOWA CITY (KWWL)- The University of Iowa is taking a proactive approach to protect against future flooding.

University officials practiced setting up Hesco Barriers for the first time Tuesday

Three teams linked, stacked, and filled the barriers with sand in preparation for a 500 year flood

The University has 15 thousand linear feet of Hesco Barriers at its disposal and says the form of flood protection will be key in minimizing the effects of an epic flood.

"One of the obvious things is how quickly these things unfold and set up," UI Director of Building and Landscape Services Dan Heater said.  "When you're filling them from a bucket of an inloader machine, you can fill those pretty quickly as opposed to using sandbags and shovels."

The university also owns 200 thousand sandbags to supplement the Hesco Barriers.
