Counterfeit bills found in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- There are a number of counterfeit $20 bills circulating around the Dubuque community. The Dubuque Police Department says the bills are being passed at local merchants. Several of the bills have been seized by police, and none have passed the counterfeit marker/pen test.

Police say the bills do not have a security stripe or hologram visible held up to a light. You are being asked to inspect currency closely if you live in the Tri-State area.

More information on detecting counterfeit currency by visiting the United States Secret Service website:

If you believe you have a person attempting to pass a counterfeit bill should attempt to notify police immediately.
