Floyd County takes steps to replace county attorney

CHARLES CITY (AP) -- The Floyd County Board of Supervisors has taken steps toward replacing County Attorney Jesse Marzen.

Marzen's law license was suspended Friday by the Iowa Supreme Court. The court ruled Marzen broke the rules when he engaged in a sexual relationship with a client before his election in 2006.

The court's ruling cited a January 2006 child custody case filed by Victoria Nehls, who initiated the ethics complaint against Marzen, who has denied the charges.

On Monday, the county's board set a public hearing for April 5, to determine if a vacancy exists for county attorney. The board also named assistant county attorney Normand Klemesrud to handle prosecutions in the interim.

If the supervisors state they intend to appoint a county attorney and no public petition for a special election is received within 14 days, the board can make the appointment.
