Judge dissolves charity

DES MOINES (KWWL) - A Polk County judge has dissolved a Des Moines charity that had been sued by Iowa's attorney general.

United Youth Careers sent young people door-to-door selling candy. Donors were told the money raised went to counseling services, job training and youth education programs.

A suit filed by Attorney General Tom Miller in 2008 accused the corporation's officers and directors of privately benefiting from its nonprofit status by making illegal distributions or loans to themselves.

Miller also alleged that canvassers told donors that their contributions were tax-deductible, even though the organization didn't have the necessary IRS status.

A message left at a phone listing for United Youth Careers wasn't immediately returned Friday evening.
