Grace period for Dubuque cell phone ban about over

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- If you're planning on driving through Dubuque while talking on your cell phone, you better think twice starting Saturday.

The ordinance banning drivers from using a cell phone while driving in Dubuque took effect on February 19, 2010.

Since then, anyone caught violating the ordinance was issued a warning.  That changes when the clock strikes 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, March 20.

Starting Saturday, drivers will be issued a ticket for $50 for violating the ordinance unless it results in an accident.  In that case, the fine jumps up to $250.

Lt. Scott Baxter, with the Dubuque Police Department, says that they have given more than 60 warnings since February 19th.
