Neighbors leave as flood waters creep closer

DES MOINES (KWWL) - Residents of a north Des Moines neighborhood are packing their belongings and fleeing the area, which flooded in 2008.

The Birdland neighborhood is again at risk of flooding this year. A reservoir upstream could overflow by next week.

In other parts of the state, residents are keeping a close eye on the Des Moines River.

In Lehigh, fire chief Kirk Kelley says more than two-dozen volunteers have been filling bags with more than 40 tons of sand and only a few low-lying houses have taken on water.

Kelley says he began planning for flooding three weeks ago and had sand delivered to town before the river rose.

The river is expected to crest north of Lehigh at Fort Dodge on Thursday.
