Change in law helps Iowa breweries

STANLEY (KWWL) - An upcoming change in Iowa law will give Iowa breweries a boost. Hub City Brewery outside of Oelwein is just one of about a handful of breweries in Iowa. Right now, it produces about a dozen types of beer but that may change soon because Iowa lawmakers have approved a change that would allow them to make and sell beer with higher alcohol content called craft beers. Currently, those beers can be imported from outside the state. Brewmasters here say the change levels the playing field in what is a fast-growing business market. It would also allow them to compete in contests that could bring prestige to Iowa breweries but they also say it's more expensive to produce. They say while you'll soon see a greater variety of beers on the shelf from Iowa and elsewhere, it may not mean beers with an alcohol content over 6% will become the most popular ones. Currently, those beers could only be distributed through the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division. The changes will allow distributors to market those specialty beers.
