Area golf courses open early

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- You know spring is here in Eastern Iowa when the golfers start hitting the links. They picked a beautiful day to open up Centennial Oaks Golf Club in Waverly. After a bitter winter, many golfers are eager to get out. Golfers in Dubuque took advantage of opening day at The Meadows and say it was a perfect start to a long season.

John Vyverberger and his friends are hitting the links for the first time this season.

"The snow melted quick. We didn't' thinks we'd be out here this quick but the sun's out and we are glad to be here," said Vyverberger.

And on the Ides of March. These guys are saying "I'd like a birdie." It's the first day The Meadows is open in Dubuque. Monday morning they made a decision and opened at noon.

"It was a quick decision on our part to really open up. The weather over the weekend was really helpful in getting us ready to go," said Pro golfer Jeremy Hawkins.

Since noon they've already seen more than 50 golfers roll through. And that's 50 more than they had this time last year. Despite a rough winter Hawkins says the course is ready.

"The frost is out of the ground so it's really just waiting for the turf to get ready to go," said Hawkins.

The turf was ready and so were the golfers. Many looking to get out of the rough and onto the green.

"It will be a great season and my game needs a head start that's why I'm out here today," said Vyverberger.

Even if a head start means a par performance. It's an early start to a season they've been waiting months to begin.

"It's great to see the sun again," said Hawkins.

Several course in Eastern Iowa are preparing to open later this week. Waterloo public courses open Tuesday. As well as Twin Pines in Cedar Rapids. The Meadows says having a few extra weeks of golfing makes a membership more valuable.
