Lickliter out as Iowa men's head basketball coach

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Iowa head men's basketball coach Todd Lickliter is no longer with the team.

The athletic department held a news conference Monday afternoon announcing that Lickliter will not return as the head coach.

Lickliter was the head coach for three seasons at Iowa.

Athletic Director Gary Barta said that Lickliter is a 'tremendous basketball coach' and 'a great person' at the news conference.

Barta also said that the men's basketball program had not lived up to the expectations and that was one of the factors going into the decision not to bring Lickliter back.

Barta went on to add that he is ultimately responsible for the success of the men's basketball program.

During Lickliter's time he had 28 wins and 36 losses.

The Hawkeyes finished the season 10-22, Iowa's first with 20 losses.

Lickliter had four years left on his contract, which pays him $1.2 million a year. He spent six seasons at Butler before succeeding Steve Alford, who left for New Mexico.

Barta is now focused on finding the program's next head coach.

"The search begins today," said Barta.
