Report: State down 1,500 employees

DES MOINES (AP) -- A published report says the number of state employees in Iowa is down by about 1,500 compared with last year.

An analysis by the Cedar Rapids Gazette this month shows that's more than 2 percent.

The decrease is expected to continue from layoffs, early retirement offerings and a hiring freeze covering most positions.

Dick Oshlo is the interim director of the Iowa Department of Management. He says up to 2,500 employees are expected to take an early retirement plan.

The cutbacks include staff reductions in the Iowa's court system.

Spokeswoman Rebecca Colton says staffing levels in the courts are 17 percent below what they were in the 2002 fiscal year.
